Troy Parrott's Rise: From Spurs to Dutch Success and Irish Heroics (2026)

Imagine the roar of the crowd, the weight of a nation's hopes on your shoulders... then picture scoring the goals that could send your country to the World Cup for the first time in over two decades. That's exactly what Troy Parrott achieved! But his journey wasn't a straightforward fairytale. It's a story of perseverance, international moves, and finally finding his stride.

This 23-year-old Republic of Ireland striker went from struggling for game time at Tottenham Hotspur to becoming a national hero, all thanks to a stunning run of form. Two goals against Portugal were followed by an incredible hat-trick against Hungary in Budapest, securing a 3-2 comeback win. These victories have propelled Ireland into the World Cup play-offs, keeping their World Cup dreams alive. His 96th-minute winner against Hungary not only completed his hat-trick but also sealed second place in Group F. The buzz was so palpable that Dublin Airport jokingly suggested renaming itself 'Troy Parrott Airport' on social media!

And that's quite fitting, isn't it? Considering how much he seems to be flying out of it! Parrott's career has taken him far from his Dublin roots, finding success in the Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar.

From Dublin Streets to Tottenham's Training Ground

Parrott's footballing journey began in the north inner city of Dublin, playing for local side Belvedere from the age of eight. His talent quickly became apparent, and by 2017, at just 15 years old, he was attracting attention from some of the biggest clubs in England: Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea. He ultimately chose Spurs, making the move to North London for an undisclosed fee.

Two years later, he signed his first professional contract. At 17, he began training with Tottenham's first team, rubbing shoulders with stars like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino. He debuted professionally in a League Cup match against Colchester United in September 2019. Two months later, under new manager Jose Mourinho, he made his Premier League debut in a 5-0 victory over Burnley.

Adding to his early success, Parrott also earned his first international cap for Ireland in a friendly win against New Zealand, even providing an assist for Sean Maguire.

But here's where it gets controversial... While Parrott showed promise at the youth level, particularly in the UEFA Youth League, breaking into the first team and displacing a world-class striker like Harry Kane proved to be an immense challenge. He made only a handful of senior appearances for Spurs.

As Jose Mourinho pointed out after Parrott missed a penalty in a League Cup shootout against Norwich City: "Don't think that Parrott is the second Harry Kane because he's just a young kid that needs to work." This highlights the immense pressure and expectations placed on young players at top clubs. Was Mourinho too harsh, or was this a necessary dose of reality for a promising talent?

The Loan Ranger: Finding His Way

Parrott proved he was willing to put in the work, embarking on a series of loan spells at Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons, and Preston. However, these moves didn't provide the breakthrough he needed. He wasn't getting consistent playing time or scoring the goals he knew he was capable of.

This led him to make a bold decision: to move abroad. He joined Dutch side Excelsior Rotterdam for the 2023-24 season, and it proved to be a turning point. He finally found regular game time and the opportunity to showcase his scoring ability, netting 17 goals in 32 games.

Despite this impressive loan spell, it didn't translate into a permanent place at Spurs. So, he made the decision to move permanently to the Netherlands, with AZ Alkmaar paying £6.7 million (8 million euros) for his services on a five-year deal.

Parrott holds no grudges towards Spurs, reflecting positively on his time at the club. "It just didn't happen [with Spurs]. I'm OK with that," he said. "I look back with a smile. It's a place where I grew up. I moved away from home quite young, so when I went there, I was in a phase of going from a kid to a teenager and then past that."

He told the AZ website that AZ was the perfect club for his development, and that assessment has certainly proven accurate.

Settling in the Netherlands

Parrott has found a home in Alkmaar. Last season, he scored 20 goals in 47 games, including four in a 9-1 victory over Heerenveen, as AZ finished fifth in the Eredivisie. He started the 2025-26 campaign in sensational form, scoring 10 goals in his first seven appearances before a knee ligament injury temporarily halted his progress.

And this is the part most people miss... This injury could have derailed his season and his confidence. But Parrott bounced back, scoring three more league goals to help AZ maintain their position near the top of the table.

His prolific scoring rate has undoubtedly attracted the attention of bigger clubs. However, Parrott seems settled in the Netherlands and is likely to consider another move within Europe rather than returning to England if he decides to move on.

International Glory

On the international stage, 2025, specifically November, has been his breakthrough moment after a frustrating few years. Since his debut in 2019, Parrott had only managed five goals for the Republic of Ireland. He was often guilty of playing well but missing crucial chances.

But in November, he doubled his international goal tally in just two games! His confidence is sky-high, and Irish fans are hoping he can stay fit and firing between now and March as he aims to lead the Republic of Ireland to their first World Cup appearance in 24 years.

If he succeeds, Dublin Airport might seriously consider that rebrand!

So, what do you think? Is Troy Parrott finally fulfilling his potential? Will he lead Ireland to the World Cup? And could a bigger club come calling soon? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
