The Fairburn Tower, nestled in the breathtaking Scottish Highlands, has been given a second chance at life. Once a crumbling ruin, this tower house, now a Category A-listed structure, has been meticulously revived by Simpson & Brown. The studio's vision transformed it into a unique self-catering holiday let, offering a glimpse into Scotland's rich architectural past.
Project architect Julie Barklie emphasizes the significance of such revivals. "Fairburn Tower, a gem of Scottish renaissance architecture, deserved to be saved," she passionately states. "Its revival is a delicate balance between preserving history and ensuring its practical use and longevity."
And this is the part most people miss: the tower's transformation is a sustainable retrofit approach. By adapting the structure for modern use, Simpson & Brown ensures its preservation for future generations.
"On the one hand, we wanted to ensure the tower's structural integrity, but on the other, we aimed to create a viable rental property that would be easy to maintain in the long run," Barklie explains.
This project is a prime example of how architecture can bridge the gap between the past and the present, offering a unique holiday experience while preserving history.
The Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award, an annual celebration of Scottish architecture, has shortlisted Fairburn Tower for its 2025 award. The winner will be announced on December 5th, and Fairburn Tower is in good company, competing against three other remarkable projects: Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge by Moxon Architects, The Nucleus Building by Sheppard Robson, and Union Terrace Gardens by Stallan-Brand Architecture + Design & LDA Design.
