New Jersey's Governor Mikie Sherrill takes swift action to freeze utility rates
Newly sworn-in Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, the state's 57th governor, has taken immediate action on her key campaign promise to freeze utility bills. This move comes just hours after she was officially inaugurated.
At 54 years old, Sherrill assumes the role of the first Democratic woman to lead the state. Her campaign promises included making the state more affordable and challenging the federal government, though she did not explicitly mention President Donald Trump during her speech.
In her address, Sherrill emphasized the need to counter the federal government's attempts to restrict opportunities, safety, education, healthcare, job prospects, innovation, and investment in energy and infrastructure. She vowed to protect the progress made by New Jerseyans and working people, especially in vulnerable communities.
Sherrill, a former four-term congresswoman and Navy helicopter pilot, succeeds outgoing Governor Phil Murphy, who was term-limited. She was joined by her four children and husband as State Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner administered the oath of office at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
Sherrill's victory over Republican candidate and Trump supporter Jack Ciattarelli was a significant achievement, as it marked the first time in 60 years that a candidate from the same party as a two-term incumbent won the governorship, ensuring at least three consecutive terms in office for the Democratic Party.
During her speech, Sherrill issued two executive orders. The first order grants the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, which regulates utilities, the power to halt new requests for rate increases. The second order encourages the agency to explore solar and storage power generation, aiming to reduce utility costs over time.
Sherrill expressed her determination, stating, 'This is just the beginning. We will tackle the affordability crisis and disrupt the status quo.'
Her administration aims to prioritize action and competence over rhetoric and fear. Sherrill has pledged to maintain transparency and compassion in her governance.
Sherrill's victory in the fall provided a boost of confidence for Democrats nationwide, hoping to capitalize on anti-Trump sentiment and re-energize voters. However, New Jersey faces fiscal challenges, including a potential $3 billion deficit due to Trump's Medicaid cuts. Additionally, the governor is under pressure to enhance protections for immigrant communities in the face of the Trump administration's enforcement measures.
Outgoing Governor Murphy vetoed bills that would restrict local law enforcement's cooperation with immigration officers and prevent the sharing of personal information with federal authorities. However, he supported a measure to limit immigration authorities' presence in schools, hospitals, and places of worship.
Sherrill had opposed the proposed Immigrant Trust Act during her campaign, arguing that it could lead to legal challenges. She has chosen not to codify the Immigrant Trust Directive, which was initiated by her first attorney general and maintained throughout Murphy's administration.
Dale Caldwell, a Methodist pastor and former university president, was sworn in as Sherrill's lieutenant governor.
Sherrill, a resident of Montclair, decided to hold her inauguration in the state's largest city, Newark, rather than in the traditional capital, Trenton. An inaugural ball is scheduled for later in the day at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford.
