Karl-Anthony Towns' future with the Knicks is in the spotlight, and his feelings are crystal clear: he wants to stay! Despite the absence of a contract extension agreement, Towns is optimistic about his future with the team. He's made it known that he's eager to continue his career in New York, prioritizing the opportunity to be close to his family and play for the fans. "Hell yeah, hell yeah. I want to stay here," he exclaimed. "Obviously get a chance to be home, see my family. It means more than the money, you know."
Towns and the Knicks were unable to finalize a new deal before the October 20 deadline, which would have added two years and $150 million to his existing contract. However, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks, he'll be eligible for an extension again after the 2026 NBA Finals.
Towns emphasized the positive relationship he has with the front office, including team president Leon Rose and Senior VP of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas. He stated, "Me, (team president Leon Rose) and (Senior VP of B-ball operations Gersson Rosas) and everyone, we’re great. I’ll go have lunch with them right now. We’re good."
Considering his current contract, which has at least two years and approximately $110 million remaining, Towns won't become a free agent until at least 2027. He also has a player option for $61 million for the 2027-28 season, which means he could potentially remain with the Knicks until 2028. Because of this, the Knicks didn't feel the pressure to rush into a deal before this season.
But here's where it gets interesting... The conversation about his future will likely intensify after the Finals.
Towns' performance this season has been notable. Entering Tuesday's game against the Celtics, he was averaging 21.7 points and 11.9 rebounds, with a shooting percentage of 44.9%. This marks a career low in efficiency, which he attributes to adjusting to coach Mike Brown's system. He's found more success playing center compared to power forward.
Towns explained, "It’s just a different place I’m in in our system. Totally different system. So when I’m 5 or I’m 4, it’s a totally different script for me in the game. Trying to impact winning as much as possible and I’m happy I’m able to do that so far this year."
