Welcome to Friday, Day 2 of the Iowa state track and field meet.
Thursday featured 12 hours of exciting action on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium— a pretty full stadium, actually, after the university lifted attendance restrictions Tuesday.
OABCIG's Cooper DeJean began his quest for 30 individual points on a high note in the Class 2A long jump. Ankeny's Lauren McMahon overcame Iowa City Liberty's Ashlyn Keeney in the final 100 meters of the girls' Class 4A 3,000 for an amazing win. Charles City's Ian Collins and North Polk's Jack Noble faced off in the field showdown of the day in the Class 3A high jump. And Western Dubuque's Aubrey Biermann pulled off the upset of the day by beating Carlisle's Ainsley Erzen in the 3A girls' 400 meters.
The Register's Matthew Bain and Cody Goodwin will be on hand at Drake Stadium all day to keep you up-to-date on all the happenings from Day 2 of the Iowa state meet.
If you want a recap of everything that happened during Day 1, here you go.

Carney finished second at 1:04.46, which was 0.07 seconds off her season-best.
6 p.m.— Bartels leaps into top 20; results from afternoon field events
Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Drew Bartels has entered rarified air.
About 20 minutes after winning the Class 4A boys' long jump Friday, the Northern Iowa-bound track and field star won the boys' 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.49. Not only was that the best time of Bartel's season and in all of Iowa this year; it was the 20th-fastest boys' 400 hurdles race in Iowa history.
Over inthe field events, Wapsie Valley's Gunner Meyer won the Class 1A boys' high jump at 6 feet, 5 inches, which was a season-best for him. In the 4A girls' shot put, Pleasant Valley's Riley, who entered as the favorite, won the title with a season-best throw of 40 feet, 6.75 inches. Paton-Churdan's Danielle Hoyle, also the favorite in her event, won the 1A girls' discus with a throw of 130-11.
5:42 p.m.— Catching up on some 4x200 relays
In the Class 4A boys' 4x200 relay,Valley squeaked by Ankeny Centennial for the win with a time of 1:27.06. Tigers sprinter Mason DouBrava was able to hold off Centennial's Trey Porter down the stretch for the victory.
In the Class 1A boys' 4x200 relay,Gehlen Catholic won the title in another tightly contested race. It finished in 1:31.31, holding off second-place Grundy Center, which finished in 1:31.64, and third-place Wapsie Valley, which finished in 1:31.69.
In the 4A girls' 4x200 relay,Waukee cruised to a victory with a time of 1:41.24, more than a second faster than the rest of the field. That was the Warriors' best time of the season, and it was the best time in the state this year.
In the 1A girls' 4x200 relay,Madrid also won the title comfortably, finishing in 1:44.82, nearly two seconds faster than second-place Nodaway Valley. That was Madrid's fastest time this year and the fastest in 1A.
5:30p.m.— The favorite emerges from a loaded Class 4A long jump field
If you were looking for the most star-studded, loaded field of athletes in the Iowa state track meet, look no further than the Class 4A boys' long jump competition.
The group featured Northern Iowa-bound Drew Bartels, the class'long-jump leader at 23 feet, 9.75 inches; Iowa State point guard recruit Tamin Lipsey of Ames; Southeast Polk's Xavier Nwankpa, a four-star, top-75 national football prospect who's down to a final seven of LSU, Iowa, Clemson, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Arizona State; Waukee's Malik Allen, who dazzled in his first year of the event; Iowa football signee Deavin Hilson of Des Moines North; and plenty more.
In the end, the favorite emerged victorious. Bartels won the title with his jump of 23-6. He was the only athlete to clear 23 feet, and he did it on five of his six attempts.
Waterloo West's Tay Norman finished second at 22-10.75. Allen took third at 22-8.25, Nwankpa finished fourth at 22-7.75 and Lipsey finished seventh at 22-2. Hilson wound up 13th with a jump of 21-0.75.
4:15 p.m.— Photo finish!
The closest finish of the Iowa state track meet so far came courtesy of the Class 4A girls' distance medley relay, in a battle for second place.
Cedar Rapids Prairie won out of the second heat, finishing with a time of 4:09.10.
Then, in the third heat, Dubuque Hempstead pulled off an incredible comeback to edge Southeast Polk by 0.04 seconds, taking second at 4:11.01. The Rams finished third at 4:11.05. Hempstead's Keelee Leitzen, the reigning state cross country champion, ran the final 800-meter leg in 2:17.08.
Hempstead trailed Southeast Polk by nearly 3.5 seconds entering those final 800 meters, but Leitzen slowly but surely erased the gap andbarelysqueaked past Rams runner Jenna Francois right at the finish line. It wasn't clear who had won the race (which was actually for second place) until the results showed on video board.
3:37 p.m.— Correll, Willand square off in wheelchair showdown
Waukee's Evan Correll and Northwood-Kensett's Wyatt Willand opened the Class 4A and 1A sessions with the boys' wheelchair 800 meters. Correll won with an Iowa all-time best time of 1:46.08. The previous all-time best, 1:52.42, also belonged to him.
Willand finished second at 1:53.35, a new personal best and just under a second off Correll's previous all-time best.
Correll, a senior, entered Friday as the defending 100, 200 and 400 wheelchair champion from 2019, and he was the 400 champion at the 2021 Drake Relays. Willand, a junior, entered as the reigning 800 state champion from 2019. He finished second to Correll in the 2021 Drake Relays 400, as well as the 2019 state 100, 200 and 400.
2:10p.m.— Catching you up on the late-morning field events
A day after winning the Class 2A boys' shot put, Jesup's Carson Lienau asserted himself as the 2A throws king Friday, winning the boys' discus with a throw of 165 feet, 5 inches. No other 2A thrower has hit 65 feet this year.
Carlisle's Isabelle Noring upset her way to the Class 3A girls' long jump title with her season-best jump of 17 feet, 11.25 inches. Keokuk's Miracle Ailes also jumped a 17-11.25, but Noring had the second-best jump between the two at 17-9.25. Noring entered state with 3A's seventh-best long jump at 17-2.75.
In the 2A girls' high jump, Sheldon's Maddie Olson dominated her way to the state title. She didn't fault once, going a perfect 9-for-9 from 4-8 to her winning height of 5-9, her best of the season and the best of all classes this season.
Olson had already won the title after clearing 5-6, but she alsocleared 5-8 and 5-9.

1:50 p.m.— Pella's Kody Huisman bounces back
Thursday's Class 3A boys' discus didn't go according to plan for Pella's Kody Huisman.
After entering the state meet leading the state— all four classes— in the event with a season-best of 186 feet, 8 inches, Huisman labored at Drake Stadium and finished third at 163-3, faulting on his final two attempts.
Things went a lot better for the North Dakota State football signee on Friday.
Huisman, who also led all the state's classes in the shot put, won the 3A boys' shot put with a championship throw of 59-4.75, good for the second-best throw in Iowa this year ... behind himself. He also won the 2021 Drake Relays shot put.
1:05 p.m.— Some results amid the prelims
Much of the Class 2A and 3A early afternoon is focused on the 4x100 and 4x400 prelims. But there were a couple finals in the distance medley sandwiched in between. Both were on the boys' side.
In 2A, Bellevue edged Underwood for the title in 3:36 flat. That was Bellevue's best time of the year and it was the best in the class this year.
In 3A, Humboldt beat Pella for the title in 3:30.11. That was also Humboldt's best time of the year and best in 3A. Unlike Bellevue, however, which entered state as the 2A favorite in the event, Humboldt entered state with 3A's fourth-fastest time in the event.
12:55 p.m.— The sun is here!
For the first time in the first two days of the Iowa state track meet, the sun poked through the clouds covering Drake Stadium. Who knows how long it'll continue. But, for now, there's some sun shining on the Blue Oval.
The runners in the boys 4x100 relay prelims are surely happy about the development. Or, at least their fans are.
12:35p.m.— Catching up on remaining morning field events
In theClass 2A girls' discus,Central Springs' Abigayle Angell won with a throw of 133 feet, 10 inches, which came on her second throw of the flight stage. That was her best throw of the season, as she entered state third in the class at 130-5.
In the2A boys' high jump,Clarinda's Isaac Jones won by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches. He went a perfect 5-for-5 on his jumps, clearing 5-11, 6-1, 6-3, 6-5 and 6-6 all in one attempt. His only fault came on his attempt to tie his season-best 6-7, when he had already won the state title.
11:30a.m.— Bock, Treynor duo shine in 400 hurdles
The Class 3A 400 hurdles belonged to Tegan Bock.
The Class 2A 400 hurdles belonged to Treynor.
Bock, a senior from Boone, ran a blistering 53.38 seconds to win the 3A 400 hurdles, more than two seconds clear of second-place Gavin Zillyette of Clear Creek-Amana (55.88). Bock was also the Drake Relays champ in the same event.
A pair of Treynor hurdlers, Sid Schaaf and Noah James, finished 1-2 in the 2A 400 hurdles. Schaaf finished first in 54.30 seconds, with James close behind at 54.81 in an exciting third heat. Waukon's Braxton Stewart took third out of the second heat.
That's also 18 big team points for Treynor, which gives them the 2A team lead over Underwood for now. Team scores are fluid. Check back for a more robust team score update soon, and read on for a robust team score update from about 20 minutes ago.

11 a.m. — Collins doubles up jump titles
Charles City's Ian Collins swept the Class 3A jumps titles.
On Thursday, Collins won the high jump after clearing 6-foot-9. On Friday, he claimed gold in the long jump after hitting 23-0.75.
Not a bad weekend for Chucktown.
Also: Clarinda's Isaac Jones claimed the Class 2A high jump after clearing 6-6. This was a thrilling competition late, as eight jumpers were still alive after clearing 6-3. But only Jones and second-place Kaleb Scott of Southeast Valley cleared 6-5.
10:45 a.m.— Unity Christian, Carlisle win boys' 4x200 relays
Your champs for the early boys' 4x200-meter relays were:
- Unity Christian in Class 2A. The team of Tyler Wieringa, Logan Franken, Clayton Bosma, and Tanner Shouten ran a time of 1:28.58, beating out second-place Roland-Story by more than two seconds (1:30.95). The Norsemen did finish second out of the second heat.

10:30 a.m.— Mount Pleasant's Brumbaugh wins 3A shot put
Sometimes, the favorites hold serve.
Such was the case in the Class 3A girls' shot put.
Entering the week, based solely on season best throwns, the favorites were: Mount Pleasant's Jadan Brumbaugh, Humboldt's Kendal Clark and Creston's Kelsey Fields — and that's exactly how they finished, too.
Brumbaugh won with a long throw of 44-9, while Clark threw 42-10.75 and Fields threw 42-9. Bondurant-Farrar's Carolyn Miller and Solon's Ava Conrad rounded out the top five.
Side note: Clark also finished third in the 3A discus on Thursday, so she'll take two top-three finishes back home to Humboldt. Another side note: she was a state finalist at the IWCOA girls' state wrestling championships in January. Heck of an athlete.
9:45 a.m.— Carlisle's comeback attempt falls just short in 3A distance medley
Entering the final leg of the Class 3A girls' distance medley, Carlisle was in eighth.
Then, Ainsley Erzen took the baton for the closing 800 meters. Within the first 400 meters, Erzen advanced from eighth place to second place, and put the pressure on Emma Bock of Solon, which had led the entire time, over those final 400.
Bock is a heck of a runner herself, though. Erzen was able to close the gap to three or four strides with 200 meters left, but Bock never let her get closer. Solon won the race at 4:05.77 and Carlisle finished second at 4:08.42. Erzen ran her 800 leg in 2:09.17, which would have been the fastest 800 time in 3A this year by nearly four seconds.
9:25a.m. — Mid-Prairie wins thrilling distance medley
Friday's running events started with a bang Friday morning.
Mid-Prairie won the Class 2A girls' distance medley relay in a thriller over Panorama. The Golden Hawks held off the Panthers with a winning time of 4:10.42. Panorama finished second at 4:10.95.
Maddie Edgington and Amber Swart gave Mid-Prairie a slight lead after the first lap, then Mitzi Evans sped away from the field to give the Golden Hawks a sizable lead heading into the anchor.
Star freshman Danielle Hostetler, the 2A champ in the 3,000 on Thursday, took the baton with two laps to victory, but Jaidyn Sellers, Panorama's anchor, made her work for it.
Sellers closed in on Hostetler through the first lap of the anchor leg and actually caught her with 200 meters to go on the final lap. But over the last 100 meters, Hostetler regained the lead and held off Sellers to win the race. The crowd loved it.
It was an excellent way to begin Friday's competition.
Also noteworthy: Western Christian finished third in the same race out of the first heat, with a time of 4:16.64.
8:45 a.m.— Your morning weather update!
It's probably going to be gloomy all day again today. (Fun!)
But it's also probably not going to rain as much as it did Thursday. (Actually fun!)
Early weather forecasts predict some rain in the 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. hours, but not so much after that. The temperature continues to be just about perfect, as it's supposed to hover in the low-to-mid-70s all day.
Of course ... Iowa weather can change at any second. So we'll see what happens.
The first events start at 9 a.m.: girls' Class 2A distance medley on the track, and the girls' Class 3A shot put, girls' 2A discus, 3A boys' long jump and 2A boys' high jump.
