Hong Kong Racing Stars: Romantic Warrior & Ka Ying Rising Dominate Sha Tin Prep Races! (2025)

Romantic Warrior and Ka Ying Rising Triumph in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's racing stars, Romantic Warrior and Ka Ying Rising, showcased their prowess in the November 23rd prep races at Sha Tin Racecourse, setting the stage for their upcoming international challenges. The day's highlight was the emergence of Galaxy Patch, who filled a potential gap in the local lineup for the December 14th Hong Kong Mile (G1).

Romantic Warrior, despite recent setbacks, including two second-place finishes in the Middle East, a minor surgery, and a 232-day layoff, emerged victorious in the Jockey Club Cup (G2). Jockey James McDonald's patient ride paid off as the 7-year-old surged around the stretch turn, taking the lead inside the 300-meter mark and maintaining it until the finish. Trainer Danny Shum expressed confidence that Romantic Warrior had overcome his travails, and the horse's success paves the way for a potential fourth straight win in the Hong Kong Cup (G1) on December 14th.

Romantic Warrior's achievements are remarkable, with HK$217.7 million (approximately US$28 million) in earnings, making him the world's all-time money-earner. However, his second-place finishes in the Saudi Cup and Dubai Turf have left his connections seeking new superlatives.

McDonald, in awe of Romantic Warrior, praised his exceptional talent and the joy he brings to riders. Shum, the trainer, described him as a superstar with a bright future, even as he approaches his 8th birthday.

Ka Ying Rising, the world's top-rated sprinter, dominated the Jockey Club Sprint (G2) with a 15th straight win, including last year's Hong Kong Sprint (G1). Zac Purton, the jockey, expressed confidence in Ka Ying Rising's performance, highlighting his excellent condition and the horse's ability to maintain his form.

The Jockey Club Mile (G2) saw Galaxy Patch, a veteran winless for over a year, seize the opportunity with a patient ride by McDonald. Galaxy Patch settled near the back, made a late move, and held off the field, finishing second to Sunlight Power. This performance opens up possibilities for international raiders in the Hong Kong Mile, a race dominated by local runners in recent years.

McDonald, who rode Voyage Bubble in the Jockey Club Mile, is now paired with Galaxy Patch for the December 14th race, aiming for a confident start into the upcoming challenges.
