Journalism and Technology: A Powerful Fusion for Energy Sector Reporting
The future of journalism is here, and it's a tech-driven revolution! On a recent Wednesday in Tema, 45 journalists embarked on a journey to master the art of energy sector reporting, armed with the latest tools in social media and artificial intelligence (AI).
Organized by Energy News Africa Limited and the Tema Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), this intensive workshop aimed to empower journalists with the skills to leverage technology for accurate and impactful storytelling. The theme, 'Leveraging Social Media and AI for Accurate and Effective Energy Reporting,' set the stage for an insightful day.
But here's where it gets controversial: Can technology truly enhance journalism, or does it pose a threat to traditional reporting methods? The workshop addressed this question head-on. Resource persons guided journalists through the maze of digital tools, focusing on research, data verification, and engaging storytelling. Mr. Charles Wundengba, a media and digital communications specialist, emphasized the double-edged sword of technology. Mr. Michael Dewornu, Chairman of GJA Tema Chapter, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, recognizing the vital role of specialized journalism in national development. Meanwhile, Mr. Michael Cregg Afful, Managing Editor of Energy News Africa, positioned the workshop as a step towards promoting quality journalism and informed public discourse on Ghana's energy future.
The journalists themselves were thrilled with the new skills acquired, feeling more equipped to tackle the challenges of digital reporting. Presentations from experts at the Electricity Company of Ghana, Tema Oil Refinery, and Volta River Authority further emphasized the need for technical understanding in energy reporting.
