But here's the catch: a recent study reveals that less than 10% of these satellites would survive long enough to justify their launch. Over the last few years, the number of spacecraft orbiting Earth has skyrocketed, thanks to private companies like SpaceX and their Starlink network, and China's ambitious Thousand Sails project. However, predicting orbits in cislunar space is incredibly complex. The gravitational forces of Earth, the Moon, and even the Sun come into play, creating a tug-of-war that's hard to predict. To tackle this issue, researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California used supercomputers to simulate the trajectories of a million cislunar objects. The simulations, which would have taken a single computer over a century to complete, were finished in just three days. The results? Roughly 54% of the simulated orbits remained stable for a year, but only 9.7% made it through the entire six-year simulation period.

And this is the part most people miss: even though a low percentage of satellites survived, it still translates to tens of thousands of stable orbits. These results open up exciting possibilities for future exploration and colonization of cislunar space.

The team's lead author, Travis Yeager, emphasized the value of this data. "From a data-science perspective, this is an interesting dataset," he said. "With a million orbits, you can get a really rich analysis."

The researchers have made the orbital data publicly available, inviting further exploration and study.
